Almost Sold Out! Maria Mendes: A night of Portuguese Jazz

(Almost sold out!)
This October the beloved Portuguese singer Maria Mendes will bring the sun to Maastricht.
Ligh on her feet, multi-faceted and full of emotion, backed up by her trio Maria Mendes is playing works from her latest album Innocentia. Her compositions draw inspiration from a variety of corners, playfully combining bossa nova and jazz.

Born in Portugal, she studied in Oporto, Rotterdam, New York, Brussels and Rio de Janeiro, she currently lives in Rotterdam and performs world-wide: from the Blue Note in New York to the AINSI in Maastricht. She regularly works with other world class jazz artists including a recent collaboration with Anat Cohen (ISR) on her latest album. She has a purity and playfulness to her sound, light as a sunbeam with a nod to jazz (Shirley Horn, Charlie Parker), Brazilian folk music (Hermeto Pascoal) pop music (Sting) and spoken word (Carmen McRae).

For years she’s played with a band consisting of the absolute cream of the crop on the Dutch jazz scene. She is backed up by none other than pianist Karel Boehlee – previously a member of Toots Thieleman’s band, Jasper van Hulten – Eric Vloeiman’s drummer, and bassist Jasper Somsen – a fixed member of Enrico Pieranunzi’s trio.

Maria has received glowing praise in the press:

– “Sultry, perfectly timed Bossa Jazz” NRC (Netherlands)

– “5 Stars!” O GLOBO (Brazil)

– “Mendes immediately profiles herself as a strong jazz singer. Intimacy and beauty from the first track” JAZZISM (Netherlands)

“I see a promising, shining future for this young talented singer.” (Quincy Jones)
