Energy allowance application

Due to current events, service costs, such as heating and electricity, have risen sharply in the Netherlands and many students are feeling the effects of this. If you are one of these students we are here to tell you that as of the 16th of January 2023, it is possible for students to apply for an Energy Allowance via Social Affairs Maastricht Heuvelland

International students are also eligible for this allowance as long as they meet the requirements.

The requirements for applying for the allowance are the following:

  • You are following an MBO, HBO or WO course and have been enrolled in the course for at least 6 months;
  • You live in a self-contained unit of accommodation in Maastricht;
  • You are registered in the Basisregistratie Personen – BRP (Personal Records Database) of the municipality of Maastricht;
  • You have your own energy contract under your name;
  • Your income is below 120% of the social minimum that applies to you;
    Please note: also include the maximum amount you can borrow from DUO to live on.

If you fit the requirements, you can apply for the allowance. If you prefer to complete the application in Dutch, you can find it here. If you want to apply in English, follow this link.

Municipality emergency fund

In some cases, students who do not qualify for this can still claim from the municipality emergency fund for household energy costs.

You may be eligible for the emergency funds if you fit the following criteria:

  • they cannot or do not make use of other support measures for increased energy costs;
  • they can show that they have higher energy costs;
  • have an income that does not exceed 130 % of the bijstandsnorm (social assistance standard).

The household scheme runs until 1 July 2023.
