Match helps students who want to contribute to the community of Maastricht – are you looking for an alternative form of housing? Match offers affordable housing for students in the city. You will work 8 hours a week on a volunteer initiative in your community and additionally use one hour a week to share your experiences. You will do this in exchange of paying rent!
Match Houses
Match Houses is an initiative of Maastricht University and is partnered with social housing corporations in the city. The idea is that you can live rent-free (you only pay gas, water and electricity) in exchange for 8 hours of work per week. You will spend your working hours in your neighbourhood, contributing to your local community. The houses are located throughout Maastricht and you will live with other students who are also part of the project. There are two types of housing that you will live in; houses that will be demolished or renovated in the upcoming years and student complexes.
The aim is that you collectively set-up your own social initiatives by connecting with your neighbours to create a dynamic community. In order to join this initiative you will need to go through an application process. Please note that you will have to speak basic Dutch in order to join the project and live in a Match house.
These are the criteria in order to apply for Match Houses. You must:
- Speak Dutch
- Have 8 hours weekly to give to work on a community project
- Be available for the full academic year
- Want to use your experience and knowledge to connect with the neighbourhood
Hospi Housing: stay with a host family
Staying with a host or guest family will provide you with a soft landing in town and is the perfect way to get in touch with the local culture and language. You’ll have your own private room and shared facilities, like a kitchen and bathroom. Hospi Housing works together with the Maastricht municipality (gemeente) and Maastricht University, and has a big network of verified hosts and guest families. They can help you get in touch and provide you with all the advice you need! You can register and apply for free.
Xior Student Housing
Xior student housing provides housing at several locations in Maastricht. Xior has both studios as well as shared housing options that you may want to consider. The amenities vary depending on the room type as does the price. Rooms at Xior cost around 300-500€ and studios 600-800€. You can check out the Xior housing website here.
The Social Hub
The Social Hub Maastricht is a hotel where students can stay for a semester or longer. The Social Hub has several types of rooms available. Additionally, they have other services that those who live there can use such as a coworking space, bikes and a 24/7 gym. The prices for the rooms and studios range from approximately 950€ to 1300€ each month. More on the Social Hub can be found here.
