Large items of trash

Environmental pass (Milieupas)

The Milieupas is important if you wish to take larger pieces of trash or additional residual waste to the Milieuparks. When you move, you automatically receive a Milieupas (environmental pass) (see image below) and waste calendar at your new address, if you have correctly let the municipality know that you’ve moved.

Didn’t receive a Milieupas? Then you can easily apply for a new one. First of all, find out which person in your house pays for the BsGW tax. Usually, this is the person who has lived longest in the house or who is the oldest resident. This person should also apply for the Milieupas. If you are unsure about who pays for the waste collection tax in your house, you can find out by calling the BsGW

It is also worth noting that your Milieupas is embedded in the Milieu App itself, however, keep in mind that you cannot use the pass in the Milieu App for certain things, like the underground containers that some apartment buildings have for non-recyclable waste. For these, you need the physical pass.

You can dispose of sanitary towels and nappies at the sorting stations (milieuperrons). You can find more information on the locations about the disposal of incontinence products and nappies on the municipality website

Environmental parks (Milieuparken)

The environmental parks are big recycling points for larger recyclable and non-recyclable waste, such as a fridge or a sofa. They are situated a little further outside the city. You can drop off most waste at the environmental parks for free, but some (non-recyclable) waste will cost you money. You can find the rates here. In the case that you have large pieces of cardboard, for example some furniture packaging, and you don’t want to wait for the paper collection date, you can also take these to the environmental parks.

If you don’t have a car, it is also possible to get the municipality to come and collect large items of trash for you, but this comes with a cost. More information can be found here

If you have something like a sofa that is still in fairly good condition, you can contact the second-hand store Kringloop Zuid to see if they’re willing to accept it. If they are, they will come and pick it up from you for free. This way, you can give your usable items a second life!
