A Very Dutch Christmas in Maastricht: Traditions, Markets, and Holiday Magic!

As we make our way through December, deadlines are wrapping up, exams might already be over (or looming just around the corner), and many of us are preparing to head home to spend the holidays with family. But what if you’re staying in Maastricht? What does it mean to experience Christmas here?
As I am in the final year of my bachelor’s degree, throughout the years I’ve gathered some of my favorite memories of Christmas in Maastricht to share with you. Whether you’re staying here or just curious about local traditions, there’s plenty of festive magic to enjoy!

Sinterklaas

Although Sinterklaas is celebrated earlier in December, it’s one of my favorite Dutch traditions, and I couldn’t leave it out of this post! Celebrated on December 5th, this holiday marks the arrival of Saint Nicholas and is a time for exchanging small, thoughtful (and often funny) gifts, along with lots of food and laughter.

In my first year, my study association hosted a Sinterklaas event for active members. I’ll never forget the hilarious gifts we exchanged and the warmth of being surrounded by friends as we indulged in traditional treats.

Maastricht Christmas Market

Nothing gets me into the Christmas spirit quite like seeing the Ferris wheel on Vrijthof Square! Magisch Maastricht, the city’s Christmas market, is open until December 31st and offers a truly magical experience.

With its indoor skating rink, towering Ferris wheel, and countless stalls selling tasty snacks, unique gifts, and plenty of mulled wine, it’s a must-visit during the festive season. If deadlines are keeping you busy, consider heading there after exams – it’s the perfect reward! Check out Social Deal for a good deal on tickets!

Cologne Christmas Markets

My absolute favourite Christmas market experience has to be in Cologne. The city boasts six different Christmas markets, each with its own unique charm. You can explore them on foot or hop on a special Christmas train for just €12.

I recently took a day trip to Cologne via FlixBus and managed to visit four of the markets. The atmosphere, with the stunning cathedral as a backdrop, was simply magical. From mulled wine and hot chocolate to pretzels and handcrafted gifts, there was something for everyone. If you’re curious, check out this video to see more of the experience!

Valkenburg and Aachen Christmas Markets

While I haven’t personally visited these markets yet, I hear they are highly recommended!

Valkenburg

Just 10 minutes away from Maastricht by train (for around €4), Valkenburg offers a unique Christmas experience. One highlight is the Fluweelengrot Christmas market, held underground in the Velvet Caves. Here, you can explore an 18th-century chapel, ancient Roman murals, and festive stalls selling gifts for Secret Santa. The market is open until December 30th, so it’s a great way to take a break from studying at the library!

Aachen

About an hour away by bus, Aachen is home to one of the most magical Christmas markets in Germany. Until December 23rd, the city’s historic center is transformed into a winter wonderland, with charming stalls, freshly baked gingerbread, and handcrafted items. The market, set against the backdrop of the breathtaking Aachen Cathedral, is consistently rated among the best in Germany.

The Perspective of a Local

Of course, Christmas isn’t just about markets and festivities. To capture the true spirit of the season in Maastricht, I interviewed one of my friends who grew up here.

He shared how his family loves to gather for cozy dinners with friends, often preparing traditional dishes together. For those who are religious, he recommended the Christmas Eve night service at St. Servaas Basilica, where his father sings in the choir – a moving and entirely free experience.

And his most memorable Maastricht Christmas moment? Wandering through Magisch Maastricht with friends and enjoying the festive lights, ending the evening with a kiss on the Ferris wheel overlooking the square.

Whether you’re staying in Maastricht or just visiting, there’s no shortage of ways to celebrate the season. From traditional Dutch festivities to magical markets across the region, you’re sure to find something that makes your holiday special.

Merry Christmas, and enjoy every magical moment Maastricht has to offer! 🎄✨
