Let’s be honest: being a student in Maastricht is great, until you open your bank app to immediately wish you hadn’t. Between rent, expensive groceries and the occasional splurge on a night out, your balance disappears faster than you’d like. But fear not, there is hope! Luckily, there’s a way to get the most out of your money through various student deals offered throughout the city and to keep your well-being alive on a student budget.
Too Good to Go
Too Good to Go is one of my go-to apps for cheap and good eats. Basically, you get tasty food at a low cost and help out businesses by reducing their waste. The app provides “surprise bags” full of items that didn’t sell out during the day, offered at a reduced price than normal. On the app, you can get anything from bakery goods to full restaurant meals. One of my go-tos is to order a few doughnuts after a long day of uni to eat after dinner.
Social Deal
Another app that I love to use for all types of experiences is Social Deal. The app provides discounted prices for services, events, meals and much more. It provides deals on different types of activities, ranging from 2 poke bowls for €13.50 at Hawaiian Poké Bowl instead of €26.60, relaxing spa days, a nice steak dinner and even a ski pass to SnowWorld in Landgraaf!
Pathé Student Mondays
If you are a movie enthusiast, you’re in luck! Every Monday, Pathé offers discounted tickets and lets you catch the latest movie releases for a fraction of the price, making it perfect after a long day of uni. A little tip: Don’t forget to bring your UM card!
Student Beans & Unidays
These two websites are some of the most popular and essential places for any student looking to save on shopping and travel. Both platforms have partnerships with brands such as Nike, Levi’s, MyProtein and Flixbus, and usually offer 10% student discounts, but can range to more types of deals. Think of sneakers, headphones, and even subscriptions that you would usually have to pay full price for.
Museum Tickets
One of the largest and most popular museums in Maastricht is Bonnefanten in Wyck. They host an array of different types of art from across the globe and occasionally host special shows/exhibitions, which are quite interesting to watch. Normal adult tickets are €22, however, as a student, they drop all the way to €11! If art just isn’t your thing, the Natural History Museum (NHM) has got you covered. With their €1 discount, you can explore nature-themed exhibitions and workshops for only €8. The NHM offers exhibitions of nature from the past and present, as well as different types of science labs. They also host guided tours and occasional science exhibition weeks!
Restaurant Discounts
Finally (and most importantly) food discounts! There are many restaurants scattered throughout Maastricht that offer a 10% student discount with your student ID. Piano B provides fresh and tasty pizza, Eetcafé de Preuverij offers lunch and dinner in a cosy pub, and Cucina 50 if you’re craving some Italian for dinner. Additionally, most student faculty associations offer student discounts in other shops if you are a member, so don’t forget to look into becoming a member!
