Housing expenses are likely to be your biggest expense during your time in Maastricht. But not to worry! We’re here to break it down and do our best to (hopefully) save you some money.
Firstly, we have an entire section dedicated to housing expenses, covering things like basic rent; service costs; gas, water and electricity (G/W/E) costs; and housing-related insurance. We also have a page specifically dealing with rental prices. We highly recommend you read through these if you want more details than what’s provided here.
Expenses breakdown
Otherwise, we’ll keep it simple. Here’s what you can expect in terms of housing expenses in Maastricht:
- Average monthly rent (incl. utilities) for student housing: €550
- Range of student housing prices: €350-€900
- Utilities (e.g. G/W/E, internet): €80-€150
Rental subsidy (huurtoeslag)
If you and your accommodation fulfil certain requirements (linked website in Dutch), you may be eligible for a form of financial assistance from the government called huurtoeslag. Not every person or every accommodation will be eligible for this, but you might want to consider choosing housing that will allow you to get the subsidy. Check the requirements on the link above to see what criteria need to be fulfilled in order to receive this subsidy.
Still, you should never bank on the fact that you will receive a subsidy: you should make sure that you are able to afford the housing you choose without financial assistance, as there is no guarantee that you will receive it and it’s better to be on the safe side.
Read our section dedicated to the rental subsidy for information on how to apply.
