Housing is likely to be your biggest expense during your time in Maastricht. But not to worry! We’re here to break it down and do our best to (hopefully) save you some money.
Firstly, we have an entire section dedicated to housing expenses, covering things like basic rent; service costs; gas, water and electricity (G/W/E) costs; and housing-related insurance. We also have a page specifically dealing with rental prices. We highly recommend you read through these if you want more details than what’s provided here.
Otherwise, we’ll keep it simple. Here’s what you can expect in terms of housing expenses in Maastricht:
- Average monthly rent (incl. utilities) for student housing: €500
- Reasonable range for student housing prices: €300-€700
- Utilities (e.g. G/W/E, internet): €50-€80
Rental subsidy (huurtoeslag)
If you and your accommodation fulfill certain requirements (link in Dutch), you may be eligible for a form of financial assistance from the government called huurtoeslag. Not everyone or every accommodation will be available for this, but you might want to consider choosing housing that will allow you to get the subsidy – check the requirements on the link above to see what criteria need to be fulfilled in order to be eligible.
Still, you should never bank on the fact that you will receive a subsidy: you should be able to afford the housing you choose without the financial assistance, as there is no guarantee that you will receive it and it’s better to be on the safe side.
Read our section dedicated to the rental subsidy for information about how to apply.
