What is the Milieu app?
First things first, most of the information you need when it comes to recycling and disposing of your garbage can be found in the Milieu App (in Dutch). The app was developed by the municipality, it contains information in both Dutch and English, and has some great features, like a map showing the different recycling points around the city, a waste calendar (which can also be downloaded here, in Dutch) to keep track of when your garbage gets collected, and a detailed search function for every object you can imagine telling you the proper way it should be disposed of. We therefore highly recommend downloading the Milieu App onto your phone. Remember to turn on the notifications, so you will be notified about the days your trash gets picked up. In the beginning of the year, your household should also get a printed calendar that indicates the dates on which trash will be picked up in front of your house. Consider hanging it on the fridge so you don’t miss the trash collection dates.
Why should I get a Milieupas?
When you move, you automatically receive a Milieupas (environmental pass) (see image below) and a waste calendar (in Dutch) at your new address, that is, if you let the municipality know that you have moved. The Milieupas is important if you wish to take larger pieces of trash or additional residual waste to the Milieu parks.
Did you not receive a Milieupas? Then you can easily apply for a new one. First of all, find out which person in your house pays for the waste collection tax (afvalstoffenheffing). This is the person who should apply for the Milieupas. This can be done online (in Dutch). If you are unsure about who pays for the waste collection tax in your house, you can find out by calling the BsGW in Roermond on 088 – 8420420. They will tell you who should apply for the Milieupas. If you change addresses, you will automatically receive a new one, provided that you have registered your new address at the municipality.
Lastly, it is also worth noting that your Milieupas is embedded in the Milieu App itself; however, keep in mind that you cannot use the pass in the Milieu App for certain things, like the underground containers for non-recyclable waste; for these, you need the physical pass.
