It is extremely important that you provide correct information about the street name and house number so that the fire trucks find their way.

- Plan your escape routes
How will you exit the house in the event of a fire? Figure out at least two escape routes and keep them free from obstacles.
2. Make sure you have enough smoke detectors
There should be at least one working smoke detector on every floor, ideally in the hallways and stairwells. Test your smoke detector regularly and decide with your housemates what to do if it goes off.
3. Think before you smoke
Never smoke in bed. This is dangerous, and often the cause of fires that result in casualties.
4. Consider where you dry your laundry
Laundry hung up to dry near a stove could easily catch fire, so be careful! You should also empty your dryer’s lint filter after every drying cycle. Dryers and washing machines are one of the top 10 causes of fire.
5. Check your sockets
Plug large electrical appliances (like refrigerators, microwaves and kettles) directly into an earthed wall socket. If you do use a multiple socket, pay attention to its maximum wattage, since overloading can cause a fire. Also, never put any other items into your sockets apart from functioning plugs.
6. Keep up with the fire extinguishers
Know where the extinguishers in your building are and make sure everyone has easy access to them. Also, make sure that they are checked yearly.
7. Prevent kitchen fires
Never extinguish a fire in your pan with water! Put the lid on the pan and turn off the gas and the cooker hood. You should also regularly clean the cooker hood.
8. Avoid carbon monoxide poisoning

9. Turn off electrical devices
Did you know that electrical appliances are a major cause for house fires? Always turn off your computer, TV and any other electrical equipment after use, otherwise they can overheat and cause fires. 10. Keep the fuse box clear and accessible
The fuse box is not a storage cupboard. It’s important to keep it clear of things and obstacles so that you can always shut off the gas and electricity quickly and easily.
